Bookies in Action: About Rs. 40,000 Crore Illegal Betting Estimated in World Cup


MUMBAI - As world cup is just a day away now; bookmakers or bookies are in action with full force despite of police crack down on illegal betting and capturing few of them. Reportedly, there are still 20,000 bookies operating in the Mumbai’s markets.

In this world cup, according to an estimate, about Rs. 40,000 crore could exchange hands through illegal betting. The betting odds and rates show that India is the favourite, at least in bookmakers’ books, in this 2011 edition of mega event being co-hosted in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

According to the advance rates and bookmakers’ arithmetic, India's rate is set at Rs. 3, which means if one bets Rs. 1 on Team India and it wins, the return would be Rs. 3. Similarly Sri Lanka is at Rs. 4.75 and South Africa is at Rs. 5.35. Australia is at Rs. 6 while Pakistan is at Rs. 8.75.
