West Indies v Ireland (March 11) - Group B: Today's Match Summary and Team Position

MOHALI, India - - West Indies brutally sunk the quarterfinal hopes of giant-killers Ireland here at Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, Mohali. After been invited to bat first West Indies had a slow but steady in response to some accurate and good bowling by Irish bowlers.

Wes Indies openers, Chanderpaul (35) and Devon Smith (107), provided a solid opening stand of 89 runs. But the real cameo played by Kieron Pollard by scoring 94 runs off 55 balls. West Indies lower-order collapsed once again and just managed to take the score to 275. Kevin O’Brien showed some skill with the bat and picked up 4 wickets; while John Mooney took 2 wickets. Boyd Rankin, Andre Botha and George Dockrell claimed one wicket each.

Chasing 276, Ireland had a shaky start too losing successive wickets with regular intervals. Only once they seemed comfortable and looking to get the target when Ed Joyace (84) and Gary Wilson (61) were partnering against the West Indies bowling in the middle of their innings. But Darren Sammy struck twice to pick up the wickets of Kevin O’Brien (10) and Gary Wilson.

After that Ireland couldn’t recover and fell on 231 with one over to spare. Kieron Pollard named as man of the match for his quick fire 94.

West Indies climbed up one position taking second on the points table just behind India; while England slipped to third after the result of today’s first match of the Group B. On the other hand England is fighting to defend a meagre total of 225 against Bangladesh who had a good opening stand of 52.

India v Ireland (Group B) - India won the toss and invited Ireland to bat first

India v Ireland
LIVE STREAMING
ICC Cricket World Cup 2011
At Bangalore
March 06, 2011, 14:30 IST (09:00 GMT)

BANGALORE - - India have won the toss and invited Ireland to bat first. Clearly a visionary decision by Indian skipper MS Dhoni as Irish batsmen had a successful chase of 327 runs against England; therefore, they don’t want to put themselves in the same position.

On the other hand, India have a strong batting line-up so it will be relatively easier to chase the target set by Ireland.

Watch the action live HERE.

Both teams have announced the final eleven for the match, named below:

Teams:Ireland (Playing XI): William Porterfield(c), Paul Stirling, Ed Joyce, Niall O'Brien(w), Andrew White, Kevin O'Brien, Alex Cusack, John Mooney, Trent Johnston, George Dockrell, Boyd Rankin

India (Playing XI): Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni(w/c), Yusuf Pathan, Piyush Chawla, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel

Ireland, The Ginat-killers, Ready For Yet Another Forceful Show Against India

BANGALORE - After a thrilling victory against England on Wednesday, the major upset of 2011 World Cup; the giant-killers Ireland are ready to play aggressive cricket in Sunday's tie against India as they attempt to add the host nation to their list of upsets.

Ireland, The non-Test-playing nation, came up with the shock of the tournament to stagger England by three wickets on Wednesday and all-rounder John Mooney said they would take on the same daring strategy in Bangalore.

John Mooney, who took four wickets and scored a crucial 33 not out against England, told that they expect the same outcome from India match on Sunday and will fight till the last ball because we play every match with no other goal than “win”.

Ireland has lost their opening match against Bangladesh with a short margin of 27 runs and they have two points from two matches and a win over India would be a major step towards reaching the next round of quarter-finals.

They owed their victory to influential batting of Kevin O'Brien, who hammered a 50-ball hundred, the fastest in World Cup history, as they revamped England's imposing 327 for eight.

India, with three points after two matches, including a dramatic tie against England, may be struggling to find the right bowling combination but O'Brien said the hosts had the resources to keep pressure on his team.
