World Cup (March 06) - Summary of Today's Matches and Points Table With Respective Team Positions

BANGALORE - - India won the match against Ireland by five wickets; but the performance of the Irish team is commendable, the way they tried to defend the small total of 207. They bowled according to their limits and forced Indian batsmen to make errors.

Ireland almost turned the tables when they picked up fourth wicket of Virat Kohli on the total score of 100; but then skipper played a responsible knock in the company of Yuvraj Singh, who himself played sensibly after dragging Ireland batsmen with his swinging deliveries.

Ultimately, Yusuf Pathan came out in the ground after captain and led the match to its end with his 24-ball knock of 30 runs. On the other hand Yuvraj Singh became the first player to pick 5 wickets and scored half century in the World Cups.

Earlier, India won the toss and invited Ireland to bat first. Zaheer Khan began the damage early in the innings, actually in the very first over. Ireland sskipper William Porterfield (72) and Niall O’Brien (46) played sensibly to rescue Ireland and took the score to 122. Both of them added 113 in the fourth wicket partnership. No other batsman posed any threat to Indian bowlers and the hero of the last match, Kevin O’Brien, fell cheaply on just 9 to Yuvraj Singh.

Ireland got all-out after scoring just 207 in 47.5 overs. Ireland skipper played a superb knock of 72 while Yuvraj Singh claimed 5 wickets from India. Zaheer Khan picked up three wickets.

Yuvraj Singh was named the man of the match for his all-round performance.

CHENNAI - - What a match! An absolute thriller it was! England fought back powerfully to clinch the low-scoring thriller against powerful South Africa. With this 6 runs victory, they didn’t not only add the two points to their credit but also revitalized their quarter-final hopes.

England bowlers came back strongly after an impressive opening stand of 63 runs provided by Hashim Amla (42) and Graeme Smith (22). The real collapse was seen at 124 runs on the board when South Africa lost three wickets including AB de Villiers (25), Faf du Plessis (17) and Jean-Paul Duminy (0).

After the fall of top-order South African middle order failed to respond as effectively as required by the situation.

England bowled their heart out to snatch this victory. Stuart Broad picked up four wickets including 2 in the last over. James Anderson claimed two while Swann, Yardy and Pietersen took one wicket each.

Group B Team Positions:

India climbed up on the top after today's victory over Ireland; while England on the second slot after handing out defeat to South Africa.
