World Cup (March 05) - Group A: Today's Match Summary and Team Position

COLOMBO – One of the most important and much-awaited match between co-host Sri Lanka and defending champions Australia was destroyed by heavy rain today at R. Premadasa Stadium at Colombo.

Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first; but the openers Upul Tharanga and Tillakaratne DilshanTillakaratne Dilshan perished early in the innings. Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar SangakkaraKumar Sangakkara had a good little partnership if 40 odd runs before Jayawardene fell short of a direct throw from Steven SmithSteven Smith, who had a stunning catch of Upul Tharanga in the start of the innings.

Thereafter, Sangakkara and Thilan Samaraweera played cautiously and took the score to 146 in 32.5 overs before heavy rain forced players to leave the ground. Sangakkara was batting at 73 and Samaraweera on 34 when rain stopped the match.

After waiting for more than three hours; the match officials decided to abandon the match and divided the points between the teams.

The points table of Group ‘A’ didn’t change with this result with Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia holding the top three positions respectively.
