ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 - - Sri Lanka Prepared to Host the Mega-Event Despite Heavy Rains And Floods

With little more than a month to go for the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, heavy rain and flash floods have created havoc in Sri Lanka, but the country is all prepared to host the mega-event starting February 19, President of the island nation Mahinda Rajapakse said.

The President said all the brand new venues in the country were on track to host ICC Cricket World Cup matches despite flooding in several parts of Sri Lanka.

"We are on track with the venues," Rajapakse told Colombo-based foreign correspondents at a meeting in his Temple Trees residence here today.

"Unless there is something like a cyclone, we can go ahead with the matches," he said.

Even though the Sooriyawewa International Stadium in the southern district of Hambantota, the home constituency of Rajapakse, has been affected badly by rains, the President was optimistic that the ground will be ready in time to host the the World Cup matches.

Sri Lanka hosts 12 matches in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup at three venues -- Colombo, Kandy and Hambantota.

But recently heavy monsoon rains have caused floods and mudslides in central and eastern regions of the island country, leaving over one million people destitute and claimed 27 lives.
