The ODI series is equally important for Pakistan and South Africa to improve their ranking in 50-over version of the game. Right now the Proteas have slipped to fourth place in the rankings, while Pakistan are sixth on a tightly-bunched table.

Since Gary Kirsten took over as South African coach in June 2011 their Test team has stood high persistently to the top of the International Cricket Council rankings. The performances of the one-day side, though, have been patchy a bit. Therefore, Proteas will not let the chance go to better their position after this series and they can earn a top spot if they managed to clean-sweep the series.

Gary Kirsten, the present coach of South Africa, said his team could play as many as 20 One-Day Internationals (ODI) before their next Test series, against Pakistan in the UAE in October and November.

“It’s nice to have an extended period of ODIs,” he said. “This is an important period for the ODI team.”

Of immediate concern for South Africa is the ICC Champions Trophy in England in June, the team's next major engagement after the Pakistan series.

The country's consistent failure to win big tournaments is one of the issues that Kirsten has pledged to address.

Although South Africa have a less than stellar one-day record of 10 wins and eight losses under Kirsten, the coach is not over-concerned because the international schedule has dictated an emphasis on five-day cricket.

"We have had a lot of Test cricket," he said.

Nor was he concerned about a lop-sided 95-run defeat in a Twenty20 international at Centurion last Sunday, which he dismissed as a "one-off" game, irrelevant to the one-day challenge.

South Africa were beaten 2-1 at home by New Zealand in their most recent one-day series after winning both Tests against the Black Caps by an innings.

Pakistan shape up as a bigger threat with players such as Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi and the Akmal brothers, Kamran and Umar -- all of whom missed their side's recent 3-0 Test series defeat -- adding experience and skill to the squad.

The Pakistanis seem to have most of their bases covered, with a mix of quick-scoring batsmen and a well-balanced bowling attack, while the fielding in the Twenty20 match was of a high standard.

South Africa, though, are likely to be a more organised team than that which lost to New Zealand -- and a great deal stronger than the T20 side -- with stars such as Hashim Amla, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Test captain Graeme Smith returning to the squad.

Steyn will be rested for the first match, though, and Morkel is doubtful because of a hamstring injury.

Leading all-rounder Jacques Kallis will not be in action as he is being rested as part of a programme to extend the career of the 37-year-old.

PCB Announces Asia Cup Squad: Imran Farhat and Shoaib Malik out for Nasir Jamshed, Sarfraz Ahmed

LAHORE, Pakistan (Sat, Mar. 03) – Misbah-ul-Haq has been retained as captain by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Saturday as the new selection committee, under Iqbal Qasim, finalized the  ODI squad for the upcoming Asia Cup in Bangladesh.

The team is set to reach Dhaka on March 7 to participate in the 4-nation Asia Cup. Defending champions India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will be the other contenders in the March 11-22 event.

As expected Shoaib Malik and Imran Farhat were axed from the squad while most of the Pak-England series were retained for Asia Cup.

A brief training camp will be set up from March 5 and 6.

Live Cricket: Ravi Rampaul leads West Indies to a challenging total of 269 in 2nd ODI against India

VISAKHAPATNUM, India – Ravi Rampaul played a real cameo to lead West Indies to a challenging total of 269/9. The last wicket stand brought 99 runs in last 16 overs.

Earlier India took the West Indies’ innings under control after winning the toss and invited the the visitors’ to bat first. West Indies kept on losing wickets from the second over of their innings and at one point were struggling at 63/5 in 17^th over.

West Indian opener Lendl Simmons played an anchor innings until he got run out at 170 in 36^th over. He made 78 runs off 102 balls. Kieron Pollard also played a handy knock of 35 runs off 30 balls; but the pick of West Indian innings was Ravi Rampaul, who played an unbeaten knock of 86 (66) with an amazing strike rate of more than 130. Kemar Roach support Rampual with his 24-run innings.

Umesh Yadav picked up three wickets; while Vinay Kumar and Raviindra Jadeja claimed two wickets each. Ravichandran Ashwin also claimed one wicket for India.

Australia Crushed the Hosts Sri Lanka by 7 Wickets in 1st ODI

Sri Lankan Players Congratulated Michael Clarke (53*)

Mitchell Johnson's career-best six wickets and Shane Watson's aggressive innings of 69 runs led Australia to a seven-wicket victory in the opening one-day international against Sri Lanka on Wednesday.

Johnson's left-arm seamers claimed 6-31 to restrict Sri Lanka to a modest 191, with lower-order batsman Suraj Randiv top-scoring with a six and four boundaries in 41 runs at Pallekele International Stadium.

Watson then hit six sixes and five boundaries to help Australia to its first win of the tour after having lost both Twenty20 matches to Sri Lanka, assisted by half-centuries from captain Michael Clarke (53 not out) and former skipper Ricky Ponting (53).

"I think we are off to a fantastic start in this series," Clarke said. "Mitchell bowled beautifully and executed his skill very well today. We've got a long way to go I think today is just a start."

Sri Lanka captain Tillakaratne Dilshan blamed bad batting for his team's loss.

"We took some bad options. We batted badly, a total of 250 would have been handy for the spinners," Dilshan said.

Batting first after winning the toss, Sri Lanka made a steady start with Upul Tharanga and Dilshan taking the total to 54 runs.

Tharanga, who was back in the side after serving a suspension for using a banned substance at this year's World Cup, hit seven boundaries for 34 runs before being bowled by left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty.

Offspinner David Hussey had Dilshan caught by Doug Bollinger for 29 with the total on 76.

Johnson entered the fray and had Mahela Jayawardene caught behind for 3 before running through the middle and lower order.

He also took the crucial wickets of Kumar Sangakkara (16), Dinesh Chandimal (15), Jeevan Mendis (2) and Randiv in eclipsing his previous best figures of 5-26 against India in 2007.

Australian openers Brad Haddin and Watson shared 59 runs before Haddin was bowled by spinner Ajantha Mendis for 12.

Watson was caught by Jayawardene off spinner Randiv after facing only 51 balls.

Clarke and Ponting put on 101 for the third wicket to ensure victory. Ponting hit five boundaries in 71 balls, while Clarke hit only one boundary in a measured knock.

The next ODI in the five-match series is on Sunday at Hambantota.

Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis in ICC Shortlist For All-time Greatest ODI Team - - Imran Khan, Javed Miandad, Moin Khan, Shahid Afridi and Saqlain MUshtaq Also Nominated

One of the best Pakistani pace bowler duo Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis,  today established a place in the list of players listed for an ICC online poll to pick the all-time greatest team as part of one day cricket’s 40th anniversary celebrations. 

“To mark the 40th anniversary of One-Day International cricket, the ICC’s official website is asking supporters from across the globe to select their choice of the greatest ODI match and team of all-time,” the ICC said in a statement.

Website www.icc-cricket.com is asking supporters to select a dream team from a shortlist of 48 players and pick their favourite game from a choice of 10 memorable matches. 

Cricket lovers and players fans can select dream team and favourite game till January 2, with the choices set to be announced on January 5 to match with the 40th anniversary of the first-ever ODI match between Australia and England.

ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said, “With the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 now less than two months away, excitement and interest in the one-day format of the game will certainly intensify. We know that fans will enjoy having the chance to remember some of the great games and great players that have played in ODI cricket during the past 40 years.” 

The Australian ODI team from 1971 will also be presented to the crowd during the innings break of the first ODI match of the series between Australia and England at the MCG on January 16. 

In the nominees for the Greatest ODI team of all time, Moin Khan is the lone Pakistani in the list of wicketkeepers. On the batting side Saeed Anwar got nomination in opening batsmen list, while Inzimam-ul Haq, Javed Miandad found their places in the list of Middle-order batsmen.

Former Pakistan captain of 1992 world cup winning team, Imran Khan listed in all-rounder category; while Shahid Afridi and Saqlain Mushtaq got their chance to be part of dream team as Spinners.
